Virginia Evans: Music
Seventh Siren
(Virginia Evans)
Five Sirens sang out from the rocky shore
From the night of the red skies to darkness e’er more
Turn away ye young sailors from their honey voices
Or know where you go, there’ll be no more choices
The song grew stronger, the men became weak
Forgetting their stations the ship drifted lee
I cried out for help as we drifted towards shore
To die where the rocks meet the crashing sea’s roar
A Sixth Siren came forth on the back of a whale
Her voice far more beauteous than ever I hailed
She was peaceful and loving her song made it clear
The Sixth Siren’s voice was all we could hear
The Five Sirens flew towards the back of the whale
They tore at the Sixth she struggled to no avail
She called out ye are lost boys to the song of the Five
Ye should offer up prayers while ye yet have life
While the boys they were praying I offered my soul
In service most holy I gave up control
While the Five hovered over the deck to await
Sleeping of sailors ‘pon which they’d seal their fate
It was then that my voice rose o’er the wide sea
On celestial music that set the men free
The Five were dispersed to the darkness of earth
As the Seventh rose up in my ending and birth
The Last Siren shines deep in the night sky
Some say she’s a star but then they ask why
Why is it that star seems to sing out to me
And guide my soul homeward from far out at sea
